Gold up $4, McEwan sees up to $5,000 in 2010
May 15 (Reuters) -- June, the most active COMEX gold futures contract, settled up $4.40 at $674.50 an ounce after trading between $666.00 and $675.00. Gold traded up amid a mixed bag of signals including the tamed inflation data and expectations for a future U.S. interest rate cut that might weaken the dollar. Bernard Hunter, director of precious metals marketing at ScotiaMocatta, said that gold''s gain was a short-term reaction to the CPI numbers. The dollar fell against the euro after the report on consumer prices suggested inflation was well contained, increasing the likelihood of a U.S. rate cut. James Moore, analyst at TheBullionDesk.com, said in a note that gold''s movement would continue to be mixed for the near future as the market remained pressured by funds'' long liquidation but underpinned by bargain hunting by physical buyers and investors. Robert McEwen, chairman and chief executive of Canada-based U.S. Gold Corp. said on Tuesday that gold prices could trade above $2,000 per ounce in 2010, possibly reaching $5,000...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow industrials rose to a record high close on Tuesday, as signs of stabilizing inflation raised the prospect of lower interest rates, boosting the outlook for business investment.

But the Dow ended well off its highs of the day and the S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq declined as disappointing results from some retailers and a report showing U.S. home builder confidence fell in May raised concerns about consumer spending.
Shares of capital-intensive industrial conglomerates including 3M Co. (MMM.N: Quote, Profile, Research and Boeing Co. (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research were among the biggest drivers of the Dow, which rose more than 100 points during the session and crossed the 13,400 level before paring gains.

The government reported that the Consumer Price Index last month, excluding volatile food and energy, showed the smallest 12-month increase since April 2006. Investors had worried that if inflation proved stubborn, the Federal Reserve would have to raise interest rates.

"The fact that the data comes on the heels of a continued high level of takeover activity, that''s given the market a bit of a lift," said David Katz, chief investment officer at Matrix Asset Advisors.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI: Quote, Profile, Research rose 37.06 points, or 0.28 percent, to end at 13,383.84, a record close. The Standard & Poor''s 500 Index (.SPX: Quote, Profile, Research was down 1.96 points, or 0.13 percent, at 1,501.19. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC: Quote, Profile, Research was down 21.15 points, or 0.83 percent, at 2,525.29.

The Dow also hit a record intraday high of 13,481.60. The blue chip index''s multiple record highs in recent weeks have been fueled by stronger-than-expected profits in the first quarter, along with takeovers. The S&P 500 has enjoyed six straight weeks of gains.

"Markets seem to be getting stretched pretty thin on the upside. We had a consistent rally, and the action in the last couple of days is not particularly good, with declining volume and other indicators," said David Straus, a portfolio manager with Johnston Lemon in Washington D.C

Sắp tới sẽ có các cuộc họp khẩn cấp về xu thế toàn cầu của các bộ trưởng tài chính để đối mặt với tình trạng lạm phát hiện nay, đi kèm với hiện tượng tăng trưởng nóng của nền kinh tế châu Á. Nói chưa được mấy hôm thì các bác đã theo chân các quỹ đầu cơ nhảy vào ôm hàng với giá trên trời, rồi còn hô hào lên, che lấp các thông tin quan trọng để nhà đầu tư newbie cân nhắc. Giờ thị trường đang chững lại, sẽ là lúc để mọi người có một cái nhìn toàn cảnh hơn tình hình hiện nay đấy.
