One way to play the manufacturing boom is through factory construction, namely that of steel maker Hoa Phat Group (HPG.Vietnam), says Pradipta Chakrabortty, co-manager of two mutual funds, Harding Loevner Emerging Markets Portfolio (HLEMX) and Harding Loevner Frontier Emerging Markets Portfolio (HLFFX). Hoa Phat has the largest share of Vietnam’s steel market. A new factory doubled its capacity to about four million tons of construction steel. Soon, it will also start manufacturing hot-rolled coil, hitherto a Vietnamese import. Hoa Phat has a market value of about $2.7 billion. Debt is 30% of assets.
