Asian Stocks Rise, Extend Weekly Gain, on Bank Optimism, Autos
By Patrick Rial and Masaki Kondo

April 10 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks climbed, set for a fifth-straight weekly gain, after results at Wells Fargo & Co. lifted speculation the financial crisis is easing and brokerages upgraded Japanese carmakers.

Woori Finance Holdings Co., South Korea?Ts No. 2 bank, rallied 7.2 percent after record quarterly profit at Wells Fargo triggered a surge in U.S. bank shares and the won strengthened. Isuzu Motors Ltd. jumped 12 percent after Morgan Stanley upgraded it to ?ooverweight? and Nomura Holdings Inc. raised its stance on the auto industry. LG Display Co. climbed 2.4 percent on speculation it will sell panels to Sony Corp.

?oThe market has started to reflect a possible recovery as there are signs the global economy is bottoming out,? said Masaru Hamasaki, a senior strategist at Toyota Asset Management Co., which oversees about $3.3 billion. ?oIt?Ts highly possible the U.S. and Chinese economies will have V-shaped recoveries.?

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index followed global stocks in a fifth-straight weekly gain, adding 0.5 percent to 87.91 as of 10:56 a.m. in Tokyo, the highest since Jan. 12.

The Asian gauge has rallied 25 percent since March 9 and is set for a 1.4 percent increase in the past five days, set for the longest stretch of gains since February 2007. The MSCI World index has risen 0.8 percent this week.

Japan?Ts Nikkei 225 Stock Average climbed 0.4 percent to 8,951.55, while South Korea?Ts Kospi index advanced 0.9 percent, and Taiwan?Ts Taiex added 0.7 percent. Markets in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong are closed today for holidays.

    Stress Tests

Wells Fargo, the No. 2 U.S. home lender, yesterday said first-quarter net income surged by half because of ?ostrong? revenue from Wachovia Corp., which it acquired last year. The Standard & Poor?Ts 500 Banks Index leapt by a quarter, the sharpest jump on record, while the S&P 500 climbed 3.8 percent to a two-month high.

Government stress tests of U.S. banks are likely to indicate most don?Tt need more taxpayer money, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Thomas Hoenig said. White House adviser Summers said conditions have eased in the credit markets and that the decline in the U.S. economy will end within the next few months.

Woori Finance, South Korea biggest financial company, rallied 7.2 percent to 9,880 won. Shinhan Financial Group Co., the second largest, climbed 3.2 percent to 30,900 won. The won strengthened against the dollar by 15 percent this week, easing the burden of servicing foreign currency-denominated debts.
