FRANKFURT, Jan 22 (Reuters) - European shares extended gains in late afternoon trade on Tuesday, led by financials and as nervous investors drew support from an unexpected interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The Fed cut its benchmark interest rates by a hefty 75 basis points to 3.5 percent, the biggest rate cut in more than 23 years.

The rate cut lifted financial shares further and the DJ Stoxx European banking was up 4.4 percent.

"There is hope that the rate cut will help stabilise banks'' operational businesses," said Markus Steinbeis, head of European equities at Pioneer Investments.

"I wouldn''t overrate it. Caution still rules the long term picture," he added.

Switzerland''s UBS (UBSN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research) gained 8.9 percent, Britain''s HSBC (HSBA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) rose 3.7 percent and France''s BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) added 6.7 percent.

By 1550 GMT, the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index was up 1.7 percent at 1,301.05 points, after hitting an intraday low at 1,223.36 points, which was its lowest since Nov. 2005. (Reporting by Eva Kuehnen)
