Lloyds TSB Agrees to Buy Mortgage Lender HBOS for $22.2 Billion

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Lloyds TSB Group Plc, the bank that considered buying Northern Rock Plc, agreed to acquire HBOS Plc for about 12.2 billion pounds ($22.2 billion) to create a lender that controls more than a quarter of the U.K. mortgage market.

Lloyds TSB will pay 232 pence a share in stock for HBOS, 58 percent more than its closing price in London trading, the companies said in a statement today. Edinburgh-based HBOS, Britain''s largest provider of home loans, fell 19 percent yesterday to 147.1 pence.

HBOS, which lost almost half its market value this week, has been hurt by a shortage of funds to back its mortgages, leaving the company in the same predicament that led to the government- backed bailout of Northern Rock a year ago. Prime Minister Gordon Brown discussed the fate of HBOS with Lloyds TSB Chairman Victor Blank as recently as four days ago, according to a person familiar with the meeting.

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve officials are signaling they are prepared to take an even larger role in trying to contain the deepening financial crisis.

A day after Fed officials seized control of American International Group Inc., the Treasury yesterday acted at the Fed''''s request to fortify the central bank''''s balance sheet with $100 billion in new cash. Fed officials can use the proceeds to pump money into financial institutions fearful of lending to each other, or to catch the next insolvent bank that''''s unable to raise capital.

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co. may bid for parts of Washington Mutual Inc., the biggest U.S. savings and loan, three people with knowledge of the discussions said.

Buyers may be interested only in pieces of Seattle-based WaMu, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. Wachovia, the fourth-largest U.S. bank, meanwhile was reaching out to Morgan Stanley to negotiate a merger, a person familiar with the companies said.

Fed, ECB, BOJ Take Joint Action to Alleviate Tensions (Update1)

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan joined with their counterparts around the world to pump dollars into the financial system and head off a deepening crisis.

The Fed said it authorized other central banks to auction $180 billion in dollar funds to financial institutions, in a statement on its Website. A joint release said that the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank also participated.
