Vietnamese dairy producer Hanoimilk is reportedly a target for Tiga Pilar Sejahtera Food, an Indonesian food producer.

Tiga Pilar is among the largest biscuit producers in Indonesia, has market shares in rice and packed noodles. It also has palm farms. In 2013, sales reached US$390.2 million and net profit was US$33.3 million. Its total assets are now US$413.1 million.

Sjambiri Lioe, Tiga Pilar's finance director, said that negotiations with Hanoimilk will be completed shortly.

Barry Weisblatt, VPBank Securities' Head of Research Department, said that Tiga Pilar hoped to expand its annual profit by US$18.8-US$23.5 million by selling Hanoimilk's products in Indonesia.

The company has seen a decline in sales and it has also been short of capital to improve product quality and develop its own cattle farm of 2,000 cows in Me Linh District, worth VND380 billion (US$18 million).

Last year, Hanoimilk recorded a net income of VND222 billion, a slight decrease of 5% over 2013. However, its net profit share fell by VND3 billion in 2013 to VND161 million last year. In addition, the company's earnings per share (EPS) was only VND13 per share.

Hanoimilk, founded in 2001, used to be one of top three dairy producers in Vietnam. However, it has gone downward due to faulty business strategies and the negative impacts caused by a Melamine incident seven years ago.

The company will have a great opportunity to get access to 10 other countries in the region as the ASEAN Economic Community officially comes into being at the end of this year.

Vietnam's dairy market is becoming hotter as there are many domestic and foreign companies. According to the VOF Investment Fund (VinaCapital), each Vietnamese person consumes an average of 14 litres of milk each year, which is half of the region's average consumption.

Last year, the VOF Fund and Daiwa PI spent VND45 million to buy 70% of stakes in the International Dairy Products (IDP). Thus, IDP targets a growth rate of 50% this year and 25% for the next three years.

Elsewhere, another domestic player, TH Milk also acquired the Dalat Milk to expand its cattle farm.

Milk products' prices continue to decline




The prices of 50 types of milk products for children below 2 years of age will drop by between 0.4 and 4% beginning on April 20.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the new prices were set after the ministry required five milk producers and traders to review and remove advertising costs from the selling prices of products for children below 24 months of age, in accordance with regulations on trading and using nutritional products for infants, under decree 100/2014/ND-CP.

The new rates will be slashed by between 0.4 and 4%, depending on the kind of milk products and the structure of selling prices they are suited for, as declared by the ministry, Head of the Price Management Department of the Ministry of Finance Nguyen Anh Tuan said.

The five companies are enterprises that were asked to set the selling prices of milk products meant for children below 6 years of age, according to existing regulations of the ministry.

These include Mead Johnson Nutrition Vietnam Ltd Company, Friesland Campina Vietnam Ltd Company, Nestle Vietnam Ltd Company, 3A Nutrition Ltd Company, and Tien Tien Ltd Company, which supplies to Mead Johnson Vietnam.

Moreover, other milk firms must announce the selling prices for their products in provinces or cities.

The ministry received declarations on reducing the selling prices of 50 types of milk products for children below 2 years of age from the five companies, Tuan affirmed.

According to the existing regulations, the ceiling cost of advertising, promotional activities and marketing is 15 per cent of an enterprise's total expenses.

Since June 2014, milk producers and traders reviewed and deducted advertising expenses from the selling prices of 686 lines of milk products for children below 6 years of age, as required by the ministry to stabilise the cost of milk products in the domestic market.

As a result, the selling prices of these products dropped by between 0.1 and 34%, he noted.

This is the second time that the selling prices of milk products in the local market has been reduced, with the new rates coming into effect on April 20, he added.
