Hanoi (VNA) – Hoa Phat Group, a multi-sectoral conglomerate, reported after-tax profit at over 7.5 trillion VND in 2019, up 13 percent from its target.

Steel products contributed most to the firm’s revenue at nearly 65 trillion VND (2.8 billion USD) in 2019, accounting for more than 80 percent of both total revenue and after-tax profit.

During the year, the group manufactured over 2.8 million tonnes of crude steel and supplied 2.77 million tonnes of construction steel to the market, which rose 16.7 percent year on year. The group exported some 265,000 tonnes to foreign markets like Japan, Cambodia, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), Malaysia, Australia, and the US.

Hoa Phat remained the biggest steel maker in Vietnam with a 26.2-percent market share, it said, noting that the company aims to sell 3.6 million tonnes of construction steel in 2020.

The company also described 2019 a relatively successful year of its agricultural arm thanks to the strong growth in livestock farming and animal feed production. Its revenue in this field was equivalent to 175 percent of the figure in 2018.

Vietnam's 2019 ferrous scrap imports rise
Vietnam's 2019 imports of ferrous scrap rose by 7.2pc from a year earlier to a record high 5.18mn t.

The two main ferrous scrap suppliers, Japan and US, seized more market share last year, accounting for a combined 66.2pc of the market, up from 53.5pc in 2018, while imports from other countries fell in 2019, according to import data released by general department of Vietnam customs.

Imports from Japan rose by 41.7pc to 2.2mn t. It was the biggest supplier in 2019, accounting for 42.4pc of the total volume. Imports from the US rose by 19.4pc to 1.24mn, accounting for 23.8pc of imports.

The next three top suppliers in 2019 were Australia at 483,027t that was down by 20.7pc, Hong Kong at 385,980t and down by 26.5pc and the UK at 127,169t that was down by 35.9pc.

Vietnam's steel industry has seen strong growth in recent years with infrastructure projects from the government and private sectors. Vietnam's crude steel production was 20.14mn t in 2019, 43.7pc higher than in the previous year, while it was only 5.64mn t in 2015.

With more steel projects launched, including the first phase of Hoa Phat's Dong Quat project that is still ramping up to full capacity, demand for seaborne ferrous scrap into Vietnam is expected to keep growing in 2020.
