China, Singapore iron ore futures fall as demand outlook dims

MANILA, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Chinese iron ore futures fell on Monday, dragged lower by bleak demand prospects for the steelmaking raw material in the wake of rising severity of the coronavirus outbreak in China, where death toll has exceeded 900.

The coronavirus epidemic has caused huge disruptions in the world’s second-largest economy, with the country’s usually bustling cities becoming ghost towns as authorities ordered virtual lockdowns, cancelled flights, closed factories and shut schools.

However, workers began trickling back to offices and factories around China on Monday as the government eased some restrictions on work and travel.

The Dalian Commodity Exchange’s most-traded iron ore contract, expiring in May, slumped as much as 2% to 574 yuan ($82.00) a tonne. It was down 0.4% by 0302 GMT.

The contract tumbled 11% last week, marking its biggest weekly loss in six months.

On the Singapore Exchange, the front-month March iron ore contract slid as much as 3.4% to $77.85 a tonne.


Spot iron ore prices also sank last week, with the benchmark 62% iron-content ore for delivery to China SH-CCNIRNOR62 shedding 14.3% to $83 a tonne as of Friday, according to SteelHome consultancy.

Amid weak demand and with many ports in China remaining shut after the extended Lunar New Year holidays, iron ore port inventory rose to 131.1 million tonnes last week, the highest since early November 2019, SteelHome data showed. SH-TOT-IRONINV

“In the short term, it will be more difficult for the physical enterprise supply and demand ... and logistics to fully recover to pre-holiday levels,” Beijing-based SinoSteel Futures Co Ltd said in a note.

The demand for steel products will likely slow down at the start of spring in China in March, it added, instead of the expected seasonal uptick.

It was unclear if iron ore supply to China would be disrupted after tropical cyclone Damien made landfall on Saturday over Australia’s west coast near Port Hedland, the world’s largest iron ore port.

FUNDAMENTALS
* The death toll from the outbreak in China rose by 97, the largest in a single day so far, to 908 as of the end of Sunday, surpassing the number of deaths from the SARS epidemic in 2002/2003.

* Construction steel rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange was up 0.1%, while hot-rolled steel coil rose 0.2%.


* Other ferrous raw materials were mixed, with coking coal down 0.1% while coke gained 1.2%.

* Stainless steel was 0.4% higher.

Với chiều hướng giá quặng như vậy dễ xuống 70 usd/tấn lắm mà HPG sắp tới lại cần nhiều quặng.
Với các DN tôn, thép nhỏ tình hình này dễ lên đường lắm. Mà HPG thì ngày càng mở rộng thị phần MN và MT.
