China’s steel imports double in June, exports fall to new low

In June this year, China imported 1.878 million mt of finished steel, up 99.8 percent year on year and up 46.7 percent month on month, as announced by the Chinese customs authorities on July 14. This signals strong demand inside the country and poor conditions in the international market, which pushed major foreign exporters to fight for Chinese buyers. The strong imports will continue in July. Traders in China are still seeking to conclude purchases of imported finished steel due to the good demand in the local market and the decent profit range.

China imported 7.343 million mt of finished steel during the January-June period of the current year, increasing by 26.1 percent year on year, 14.1 percentage points bigger than the increase rate recorded in the first five months of the year.

Meanwhile, in June China exported 3.701 million mt of finished steel, decreasing by 30.3 percent year on year and down 15.9 percent month on month. Sales of June shipment products from China were done mainly in the April-May period, when the pandemic significantly cut consumption in Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries, while paralyzing operations in Europe, and led to a fall in exports volumes from China.

In the January-June period of the year, China exported 28.704 million mt of finished steel, down 16.5 percent year on year, while the year-on-year decline was 2.5 percentage points higher compared to that recorded in the January-May period of the year.

BEIJING, July 14 (Reuters) - China’s iron ore imports jumped 17% in June from a month earlier to hit the highest level in 33 months, customs data showed on Tuesday, fuelled by rising shipments from miners and robust demand in China.

The world’s biggest steel producer brought in 101.68 million tonnes of iron ore last month, surging from 87.03 million tonnes in May, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. Imports were also up 35% from June 2019.

June shipments were the highest monthly imports since October 2017.

“June is the last month of the Australian financial year and miners were motivated to ship out more material for decent financial results,” said Zhao Yu, analyst with Huatai Futures, adding that steel mills were also buying up on hopes of more demand after the rainy season.

Australia’s shipments of iron ore to China from the world’s top export hub of Port Hedland climbed to a record of 46.2 million tonnes in June, data from the port authority showed on July 10.

For the first half of the year, arrivals of the steelmaking raw material came in at 546.9 million tonnes, up 9.6% from the corresponding 2019 period, the data showed.
