Yen Falls on Speculation of Intervention; Noda to Meet Press

The yen fell ahead of an address to reporters by Japanese Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, sparking speculation Japan intervened to weaken the currency.

Kyodo News reported that Japan likely intervened in the currency market to push down the yen, citing unidentified people in the market. Noda will address reporters in Tokyo at 10:50 a.m., the government said.

“There’s a lot of chatter that the BOJ is checking rates at the moment,” said Charles Han, Hong Kong-based head of foreign-exchange trading at Newedge Financial HK Ltd. “It’s not confirmed intervention or anything but there’s a lot of talk that they’re checking rates, which is causing dollar-yen to spike up a bit higher.”

The yen traded at 83.94 to the dollar as of 10:51 a.m. in Tokyo. Japan’s currency was as strong as 82.88 earlier, the highest since May 1995, and closed at 83.04 in New York yesterday.
