NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -- U.S. stocks were mostly higher in early action on Friday after initially slipping, with euro zone worries still present, but the market supported by financials after the U.S. Senate approved the biggest financial overhaul since the 1930s.
The Standard & Poor's 500-share index /quotes/comstock/21z!i1:in\x (SPX 1,083, +11.85, +1.11%) traded near its lowest level on May 6, when the "flash crash" sent the market into a nearly 1,000 point tailspin, erasing the market's later rebound. The S&P was up 3.1 points, or 0.3%, to 1,074 in early trading.
Friday's early declines point toward an extension of the market's steep three-day drop. On Thursday, U.S. stocks and a range of assets tumbled as tensions mounted over global growth, regulatory concerns and debt worries in the U.S., China and Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/comstock/10w!iji/delayed (DJIA 10,143, +75.19, +0.75%) posted its worst close since Feb. 10, putting the blue-chip index more than 10% below its April 26 high as all three benchmark indexes slid into technical corrections.

Jobless rates drop in 34 states and DC

WASHINGTON — Unemployment rates fell in a majority of states last month as improved economic conditions spurred hiring.
The Labor Department says that 34 states and the District of Columbia reported their jobless rates fell in April. Six states reported higher rates, while 10 saw unemployment hold steady.
That marked an improvement from March when 16 reported declines in unemployment, 22 saw increases, and 12 had no change, according to revised figures.
South Carolina's rate fell to 11.6 percent in April, from 12.2 percent in March, marking the largest monthly drop of any state.
