Tepco agrees 24% price rise for thermal coal

Japan`s top utility Tokyo Electric Power has agreed to a 24% price hike to pay Xstrata`s Australian coal unit about US$155/t for mid-term thermal coal contracts, traders from Australia and Japan said on Monday.
Traders said Xstrata and some Japanese utilities, including Tepco, had struck an agreement late last week. The deals are for annual contracts that run from October 1 2008 to September 30 2009.
"Tepco reached an agreement with some (Australian producers) at the mid-US$150s levels," said a Tokyo-based source familiar with the negotiations.
Two other Tokyo-based traders that supply coal to Japanese utilities said the agreement was struck with Xstrata at about US$155/t.
Although the settlement price is markedly lower than Xstrata`s initial offer price of $175/t at the start of September, traders said the agreed price would still be a big boost to Asian coal prices, which settled at a 5-½ month low of US$127.30 in the week ended September 27 on globalCoal`s Newcastle weekly index.
"I suppose it is a good price for Xstrata considering where the index prices are at now," said an Australian producer. "But this is certainly much lower than what producers were hoping for one or two months ago."
While there has been no shortage of bullish news for the coal market in recent weeks, prices have tumbled more than US$73 since its record high of US$201 struck in early July, dragged down by oil and gas markets and amid concerns of slackening demand.
Several traders said Chubu Electric Power Co had also settled with Xstrata at similar price levels, while negotiations with smaller utilities, such as Tohoku Electric Power, were still ongoing.
Chubu and Tohoku declined cto omment.
It was unclear if Tepco or Chubu had agreed to cancel outstanding 2007 tonnage with Xstrata, a move which could bring the real value of the settlement higher.
Japanese utilities typically have several term contracts that begin in different periods through the year. The bulk of the order is set in the fiscal year from April to March.
The contract with Xstrata is for coal with a net calorific value of 6,000 kcal/kg.

Coal price rises by nearly half
    Coal on fire
People are reported to be buying three times as much coal as before

The price of a bag of coal in Guernsey has risen by nearly 45%.

A 25kg (55lb) bag now costs Ê11, rather than Ê7.50, prompting calls for the States supplementary fuel allowance to be increased to cover the rise.

The island''s main distributor, Guernsey Coal, said the increase was necessary to cover higher exchange rates and higher shipping and transport costs.

Guernsey''s Co-op reported customers buying up to three times as much coal as usual ahead of the price rise.
